Celebrating the various incarnations of the walking dead in horror.
1. The Beyond
Lucio Fulci is the master of OTT gore, and he didn’t disappoint here. A little girl gets zombified in the morgue before getting her head blown open.
2. I Walked With a Zombie
My personal favourite zombie film! Betsy walks the catatonic Jessica through the fields to attend a voodoo ceremony, and comes across this eerie sentinel.
It really doesn’t get worse than a zombie clown
4. Living Dead Girl
Jean Rollin creates a tragic zombie in Catherine, an heiress revived from the dead by a radioactive spill, gradually regaining her humanity but unable to resist her hunger for human flesh.
5. Plague of the Zombies
Hammer at its best. The appearance of this guy is completely unexpected and satisfyingly gruesome.
6. Night of the Living Dead
Obviously there would be a Romero film on this list. Here’s the one that started it all – the sinister ghoul in the cemetery.
7. Dawn of the Dead (2004)
A remake I actually enjoyed. A cute little girl turns deadly – loved the shot of her standing in shadows at the door.
8. Trick ‘r Treat
A busload of murdered kids rise from the grave to seek revenge.
9. The Fog
Don’t know if these should be classified as zombies or ghouls, but either way I love them. Especially how polite they were in their rampage. They always knocked on doors, and went away if no one answered. Romero’s zombies could learn something from them.
10. Dellamorte Dellamore
A black comedy from Italy, Francisco Dellamorte guards a cemetery where the dead don’t like to stay buried, and ends up having to do battle with the corpse of the woman he’d loved.
